Volunteer at Arnos Vale

volunteerVolunteering is vitally important at Arnos Vale. The Board of Trustees and many of the activities are run by volunteers and the campaign to save Arnos Vale was led entirely by volunteers. We rely heavily on volunteers to deliver many of the activities offered here, and maintenance and development of the site which ensures that Arnos Vale has a sustainable future.

Our Volunteer Coordinator has been employed to recruit and work with volunteers to help them have a satisfying experience and support them in delivering valuable outcomes to ensure the work continues at Arnos Vale.

As well as a wide range of opportunities for individuals we offer corporate or group volunteering experiences and team building days. We are currently looking for volunteers to help in our Gift Shop and also to help run the cafe through the summer holidays.

If you are a keen walker and could offer a morning, day or a couple of days each month to take flyers and leaflets around to surrounding venues to help spread the word about Arnos Vale then we'd also love to hear from you. If you can help please contact Sarah on 0117 971 9117 or email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

What could I do?

Some of our work is seasonal, some roles are best suited to people who can offer a set amount of time per day or per week, others will be more convenient for people who can help occasionally.

There are a variety of supported roles for volunteers at Arnos Vale. These include:

  • Shop assistants
  • Site receptionists
  • Heritage tour guides
  • Landscape works
  • Researchers (Family History)
  • Grave tidy
  • Talks
  • Support of events and festivals
  • Education activities and research

What's in it for me?

Firstly and most importantly Arnos Vale Cemetery is an inspiring place to be, it is full of atmosphere, packed with wildlife, history and run by a friendly team of staff and volunteers who all love it here. Volunteering is a great way to meet people who are all involved in supporting a cause they care about, and the outdoor work is a great way to keep fit and get some fresh air right in the heart of the city.

If you're looking for work you might like to try something new, update your skills, improve your confidence and bump up your CV. If you have some time on your hands and you would like to support a local charity and the local community in a practical way there are lots of ways to help, whatever your age or experience.

We will ensure that you are sufficiently prepared for whatever role you take on and are properly equipped to do it safely. The Arnos Vale Cemetery Trust is so committed to supporting volunteers that it has a dedicated Volunteer Coordinator to do just that. All volunteers are entitled to claim limited travel expenses and are covered by our Public Liability Insurance.

My community group would like to come and help. Can we do this?

When Arnos Vale was neglected many groups contributed to the site helping to cut back vegetation to clear graves and open up paths. thanks to this support and that of regular volunteers most paths are now clear and the Arnos Vale Cemetery Trust is working to a site management plan designed to balance the very special wildlife population with the expectations of visitors.

It is very important to us to protect and support the wildlife habitats at Arnos Vale and we also have a duty to support and supervise volunteers so everyone can contribute safely. This means providing the proper equipment, training, risk assessments and supervision combined with ensuring work is appropriate to the time of year and weather conditions. It is often the case that more landscape management tasks take place during the winter months when the wildlife is less active.
