The perfect way to spend April Fool's Day!
Tall tales and urban legends from Bristol past and present.
Bristol is so old that it has its own fairy tales. From earliest times to the present day, Bristolians have told one another tall tales about local people, places and events which they swear are true. They've also related yarns which they know are probably or most definitely nonsense, but entertaining nonsense.
The city has plenty of urban myths which, thanks to the internet, are merely local variations of stories told all over the world. But we also have an astonishingly rich heritage of myths which couldn't have been made anywhere else.
In this talk, local author and journalist Eugene Byrne looks at some tall tales from Bristol's past all the way to modern urban legends. "The old historical tales have been very carefully and meticulously researched, checked and referenced" he says. "But the more recent stories come from much more reliable sources, including the internet, conversations overheard on the 54 bus, and rubbish that journalists tell each other in pubs."
Meet the Speaker Eugene Byrne is a freelance journalist and occasional author. One of the founders of Bristol's Venue magazine, he is still its Consulting Editor.
With artist Simon Gurr he has produced graphic biographies of Brunel, Darwin and the City of Bristol, as well as writing the 2010 Arnos Vale Cemetery Guidebook. He's also written science fiction novels and is a regular contributor to BBC History magazine.
