| Do we gawp or do we bury? |

Monday 31st October 7:30pm-8:30pm Join us for the Autumn season of talks running this October to December at Arnos Vale Cemetery. On the anniversary date when her bones were finally laid to rest, we tell the tale of an alleged nineteenth century Cornish witch, Joan Wytte of Bodmin. Joan Wytte of Bodmin, a reputed witch was imprisoned for common assault in the early 1800s, but died in jail just before she could be tried. Her skeleton then experienced an "afterlife" on display in various museums before becoming the subject of a folk musical and being reburied in the late 1990s, subsequently becoming the focus of veneration by a variety of groups, both pagan and otherwise. With extracts from the musical composition, moving and amusing in turn, this discussion of the remarkable Joan Wytte raises throught-provoking questions about ethics, folklore, myth-making, contested reburials (for example the recent Druids at Stongehenge case), and how we approach the issues of death and remembrance today. ABOUT THE SPEAKER Dave Evans (PhD Bristol) is a social historian specialising in British occult and countercultural issues.
