Evening Talk: 7:30pm-8:30pm

Join us for the Autumn season of talks running this October to December at Arnos Vale Cemetery.

What makes a good death? In the Catholic Middle Ages death was simply considered the portal into the Afterlife, and going to meet one's maker was fraught with fears and perils.

Most souls, it was believed, went on a journey that lasted thousands of years, through Purgatory, before reaching their final destination in Heaven. For a few, the very very good, Purgatory could be sidestepped, and Heaven beckoned immediately; for a few, the very very bad, Hell was their eternal destination; and for another few souls, those who had died as unbaptised infants, eternity would be spent in Limbo.

No-one knew which journey their souls would take, and so the wise and pious made as many preparations as they could. These preparations constituted a massively important part of Medieval life and culture, which we explore with illustrations from medieval history, art and literature.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Dr Peter Fleming lectures in medieval history at the University of the West of England, Bristol. He has published books and articles on medieval religion, charity, landed society, families and urban history.
