Friday 21st October 6:45pm - Gates Open 7:00pm - Optional 20-minute guided Garden Walk 7:30pm - 8:30pm Evening Talk Join us for the Autumn season of talks running this October to December at Arnos Vale Cemetery. Learn how the therapeutic health benefits of landscaped gardens have been used since the early nineteenth century.
From rustic cottages with "Gardenesque" planting, to roof-top terraces and glass-roofed courtyards, landscaped spaces have been applied therapeutically for centuries and research continues to support their use today. Taking as a starting point the highly ornamented gardens of nearby Brislington House asylum, we will explore the medical and cultural ideas that have influenced the design of hospital gardens in England, as well as twentieth century developments and the contemporary use of open-air therapeutics. The first of our Autumn talks series includes an optional pre-talk guided walk around the beautiful landscaped surroundings of Arnos Vale's garden cemetery. Meet the Speaker: Dr Clare Hickman is working on the Leverhulme Trust funded, Historic Gardens & Landscapes of England project at the University of Bristol. Her book on hospital gardens, Therapeutic Landscapes, will be published by Manchester University Press in 2012. She also won the Garden History Society Essay Prize for her work on the gardens at Brislington House, Bristol, and is currently researching the gardens of vaccination pioneer, Edward Jenner, and the surgeon, John Hunter.
