MEASURE FOR MEASURE (2,1) Friends betraying friends, turning your back on true love and exile with the fear of death upon return - and that's just the comedy! The performances will take place INSIDE the Anglican Chapel. If the weather permits, the first part of the performance will take place outside the Spielman Centre, next to the licensed bar! Please dress warmly, wear sensible shoes and you may wish to bring a torch. Two Gentlemen of Verona is believed to be Shakespeare's first play. One that clearly sees a writer in the early days of his career, full of ambition but with one clear outcome in mind - entertainment. A play that also inspired many of his later works - Twelfth Night, As You Like It, Midsummer Night's Dream amongst others. Two friends, two girls and a whole bunch of lies. Measure for Measure - a play written during Shakespeare's glory days. Hamlet had just been written and performed, a new monarch was on the throne and his writing took a change of pace. A much darker play, he puts politics and morals head to head during an administrative transition. From a crumbling state to an iron fist, 400 years on Measure For Measure still strikes home. Roughhouse Theatre, in association with Arnos Vale Cemetery, is thrilled to be placing two of Shakespeare's lesser performed plays side by side in a site specific performance that takes in one of Bristol's landmark sites in a new and exciting way.Roughhouse Theatre was established in 2001 with the express aim of producing classical theatre, rarely performed plays and supporting new writing throughout development and into performance. Most recently, Roughhouse Theatre produced the 24 Hour Play project at the Theatre Royal, Bath ("spunky, adrenaline-rich verve of a 1970s punk album... a reminder of how exhilarating theatre can be."
