An Unruly Lot: Women in the Nineteenth Century

lady-Victorian-for-webEvening Talk with Dr Kristen Doern

Thursday 5th May

7:30pm - 8:30pm

Find out how some of the most apparently respectable women in the nineteenth century really were a rather unruly lot!

From the angel in the house, to the fallen woman, the do-gooder, and the militant suffragette, women in the 19th century were often presented – and still are – as one of these stereotypes.

But what did real nineteenth-century women get up to?

Why were the Victorians so preoccupied with 'the Woman Question'?

This talk explores the idea that even some of the most apparently respectable women in the nineteenth century really were a rather unruly lot!

Information on the Speaker: Dr. Kristin Doern teaches Heritage Studies and modern British history at Bath Spa University. Her particular areas of expertise are the history of feminism, women’s activism and social reform movements.
