Mad Hatters

mad-hatter-hat-cut-roundWorkshop for Children

Tuesday 12th April

Two Sessions available: 10:00-11:00 and 11:30-12:30

Have you got a "crafty" kid? If so, come and create a fantastic, fabulous hat to take home at one of our Spring Workshops on 12th April.  Your child will create a top hat, fancy bonnet or funky crown to take home with them. This is an opportunity to give your imaginative kid a chance to follow an old tradition, get creative and make their own uniquely designed fantastic Spring hat.

They will get the opportunity to dress up in a range of historic and modern hats, study the design of our own collection of fabulous hats and then have a go at making their own.  A fantastic range of materials and craft stuff is all supplied and the workshop is expertly led by teacher and keen hat wearer Janine Marriott.

A craft workshop suitable for children aged 6 and upwards at a cost of only £5 per child to include all materials. Two workshops are available: 10:00-11:00 or 11:30-12:30.

The first Easter bonnets were worn before we even started celebrating Easter. The first hats were not hats at all but rings of leaves and flowers to celebrate the coming of spring. Today, the Easter hat is typically round but is still traditionally filled with leaves and flowers. Typically as the days got longer and the plants burst into life, people started to spring clean and sort out their homes often getting new clothes to wear for the coming season, including new hats.

Irving Berlin wrote a special song entitled "Easter Parade" about the Easter Parade in New York. This was an annual festive walk that made its way from Fifth Avenue to St Patrick's Cathedral and ladies would wear and display their new frilly bonnets.
