Budd's Marvellous Medicine

Join us on Doors Open Day, one of our biggest public events of the year.

This year we celebrate the 200th birthday of Dr William Budd, a medical professional whose work transformed the city's sanitisation and saved many lives from the scourge of Asiatic Cholera.

Learn about Victorian medicine and how it transformed Bristol and the world on our "Marvellous Medicine" guided tours, running throughout the day.

Entry to Arnos Vale is FREE OF CHARGE with woodworking, live theatre and kids' colouring in, and there is lots to see and do whilst you are here:

  • Watch green-woodworking demonstrations by skilled artisans in the woodland compound, or buy a bag of Arnos Vale Charcoal or logs for your fire
  • Treat yourself to a cake in the Spielman Cafe where the colouring corner offers kids an artistic outlet.
  • Drop into the beautifully restored Anglican Chapel, where the Roughhouse Theatre will be rehearsing Shakespeare
  • You can also visit the two public exhibitions, take a self-guided trail around the site or wander at will.
  • Visit our Beer Tent outside the Spielman Centre for a quick cider, beer or glass of wine

If you have an hour and some spare change, then join one of our Guided Tours running hourly from 10:00am-3:00pm starting from the Spielman Centre.  Tickets cost £4 and are available from our Ticket Booth just outside the East Lodge building.

launch-pictureIt is also your very last chance to see "Treasure", Arnos Vale's much-loved gorilla, before he joins the other Bristol Zoo Wow! Gorillas for auction.
