| Rajah Rammohun Roy - Rajah, Reformer, MP? |
|
Known as the "Maker of Modern India", the philanthropist and social reformer Rammohun Roy achieved international fame during his visit to Britain as India's ambassador in the 1830s.
In 1831, political philospher Jeremy Bentham proposed that the Brahman Rammohun Roy should stand for parliament, a radical suggestion some 60 years before the first election of a South Asian representative in parliament and at a time of national riots and emancipation campaigns for Catholics and Jews.
Bentham's suggestion and Rammohun's earnest consideration of it indicate his status in reform circles at this crucial moment in British political history, while raising intriguing questions regarding Rammohun's religious identity.
